Bests Of The Year

Belichick wins his third Coach of the Year award amidst a pool of worthy choices. He receives 30 of the 50 AP votes. His peers didn't vote for him; members of the press did--and only 50 of them. By the way, neither Mike McCarthy nor Mike Tomlin drew a single vote. I guess the voting press weren't from Wisconsin or Pennsylvania (however Andy Reid did gain a vote). What is this award worth? Was Belichick the most deserving choice?

  1. Belichick was well-deserving of the award but I actually would have voted for Raheem Morris for a couple of reasons. He was able to turn that team around from a 3-13 year before to a 10 win team this year with 10 rookies starting. Has to be one of the greatest turnarounds ever. And I also can't stand Belichick.

  2. Tony, I agree with you on Raheem. He also had a ton of veteran injuries to overcome on top of those rookies. Also you may face the wrath of Tyler for your Belichick hatred.

  3. This morning, I would have told you Mike McCarthy (because he put up with tougher injury problems than anyone and won two tough ones to get into the playoffs, plus Belichick has Brady). Obviously, Belichick's coaching is what won most of their games (and it also lost to the Jets in the playoffs). In my limited estimation, Bill was beating the pants off of teams with one of his worst rosters.
I don't think Morris is a bad choice either, but I also don't know what goes into the voting. We have no idea how delicately Andy Reid spoke to Vick and Kolb separately to get that team to the playoffs.
My choices at this moment would be as follows:
    1. McCarthy, GB
    4. Belichick, NE
    6. Payton, NO
    17. Del Rio, Jac
    29. Phillips, Dal

  4. Belichick is the clear number 1 IMO. Tom Brady is the only elite player on the offensive side of the ball for them(with the possible exception of logan mankins), everyone else would be role players if they were on other good teams. On defense, they are playing so many young players it's ridiculous. Despite these things, they were still the best team in the league this year. McCarthy did a good job with what he had, but lets not pretend like he went 14-2 and did it with a bunch of scrubs. He went 10-6 with a roster that was just loaded with talent, even with all the injuries.
